Subject: Weather questions

Since we are looking at two days of rainy weather with the possibility of flooding, I want to clarify some issues.
Personnel questions that often arise:
Staff who choose not to come to work because of weather. They will not be paid for the day, but they can take vacation, dock or personal day (if they have one) or make up the time within the pay period.
Staff who are at work and are sent home because of power outages or street flooding with the potential of more rain on the way. Since we asked them to go home, we will pay them.
Staff who may get caught out of the building in the middle of the day If they attempt to return to their branch but found such street flooding in the area that they were stuck for hours and a few ended up not returning to their branch. If the staff follow procedures and notify their supervisor that they were not able to return to work but did attempt to, then you can approve their pay for their entire shift. If you don’t feel that they attempted to return or did not report back timely you don’t have to approve the pay.
Another thing to remember – there is a big difference between street flooding and building flooding. It is not prudent to close and send people into flooded streets. Although we did have had a few staff stranded in the building during heavy rains, that is a very rare occurrence. The general guideline is “if staff memebers choose to go home (or not come to work), we won’t give them base pay; if we choose to send them home, we pay them”.
Stay in touch with your District Manager if you have questions or if weather gets bad in your area. You are welcome to contact me with questions as well.
Thanks,
Gina
