Volunteers

A few notes about volunteers, so that we're all on the same page:

At the reference desk, there is a white notebook with volunteer sign in sheets. When I have contacted the volunteers references and set up an interview with the volunteer, I make a time sheet for them and indicate on the top when they are to come in for the interview with me and possibly either Diane or Maria, depending on where they are going to work. When I have checked this off, they are ready to start working, and not before. Attached to the sign-in sheet will be the schedule that has been agreed upon for that individual (Edith, Sa and Richard are exceptions, because they are our computer tutors and they are noted on the computer schedule).

Volunteers should start a new time sheet for each month. This is indicated in the volunteer notebook, with instructions for filling out the timesheet. Extra sheets are in the back of the notebook. Originals are sent in to Marlena Mitchell downtown monthly, and copies are kept in the black volunteer notebook on my desk, should anyone need a copy of the hours that they worked.

When someone comes in to volunteer, the volunteer applications are in the front of
the white volunteer notebook kept at the reference desk. We DO NOT, per instructions from Marlena Mitchell, take court ordered volunteers, NOR ARE WE UNDER ANY OBLIGATION TO DO SO. Please ask if the individual has been assigned by the court to do volunteer service, and, if so, explain that we cannot use them.

For other prospective volunteers, please stress that they must give us two adult references (not family); they must give us their phone numbers, and have the applicant indicate whether these are daytime or nightime numbers. Completed applications should be taken to the back room and placed in my box; applications contain sensitive information and should not be left at the reference desk.

Thank you for your assistance,

cb
